Description
A biennial plant 50 to 150 cm tall. The stems are erect, branched above, with curly and cobwebby hairs. The leaves are sinuately pinnatisect, green above with appressed bristles, greyish cobwebby beneath, with stout spines of 3 to 7 mm. The flower heads are solitary, 3 to 4 cm across, the florets violet-red. It flowers in August and September and grows along roads, on clearings, forest glades and limestone slopes.After the „Flora of the USSR“ (reproduced at Plantarium)
