Cantharellus tubaeformis, the winter chanterelle, forms mycorrhiza mainly with conifers and more rarely with broad-leaved trees. It grows in shady forest on acid soils, among damp moss or on rotting wood, and is distributed across the northern temperate zone. It fruits in large groups and may form rows and rings.
