Description

A perennial glabrous plant 60 to 150 cm tall, with a creeping rhizome. It grows on moist humus-rich soils, in shrub thickets along rivers and water bodies, and among fields. It flowers from July to October. Several hardly distinguishable species and their hybrids are grown under this name; the parent species come from North America, and in Europe the plant has been escaping from cultivation since the 19th century.
