Description

The birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus) grows singly or in groups on the trunks of dead birches. The fruit bodies appear at the late stages of wood decay, usually towards the end of summer; in spring and early summer one finds last year's overwintered fruit bodies — dead but well preserved — on standing dead birches.
